GIS contribution to the International Course on African Trypanosomiasis

Acronym:ICAT
Project type:Capacity Building
Time frame:2001 - todate
Funding agency:WHO

Geographic keyword: Africa
General keyword: Training | GIS
Specific keyword: African animal trypanosomiasis | Sleeping Sickness | Tsetse

The objective of the International Training Course on African Trypanosomiasis is part of the annual training courses developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Association against Trypanosomiasis in Africa (ATA) to meet the need in human resources to combat the disease in the field. To date it has subsequently been organized in Marseilles (2000), Lyon (2001), Lisbon (2003) and Tunis (2005).

The International Courses on African Trypanosomes is intensive. It aims at improving the knowledge and skills of staff working in national control programs or NGO's involved in disease control. It expects to increase the awareness of the younger staff to the obstacle the disease represents for the development of the rural population of Africa through teaching and provide them with the essential knowledge about the disease itself, its epidemiology and treatment. This Third Course will consequently constitute another step in trypanosomiasis training for the new staff involved in surveillance, control and research.

Another important expectation of this course is to establish a link between the new comers in the field of sleeping sickness and those who have worked in this area for many years trying to better understand the disease, find solutions to field problems and improve patient management. Consequently the teaching staff is selected among the most experienced individuals in the different areas of program implementation which ranges from the parasite and the disease, through the vector, to program administration and management.

Since 2001 Avia-GIS has regularly been asked to teach at the course. At ICAT4 the following topics will given by Avia-GIS staff:
Tsetse and trypanosomes - trypanotolerance
Relationship between host and vector
Integrated vector/disease control
Geographical information systems
Factors affecting spatial epidemiological risk

As an example two PowerPoint presentations from the Lisbon course are provided here.
